It has been pointed out by some class members that I have not blogged for a while so I thought I would get everyone up to speed with what is going on with the Dung Beetles.
This week, we have been practising our NAPLAN tests with some similar examples I purchased from Excel. We have taken two spelling, one reading, one maths and today we will be writing one persuasive piece. The persuasive is not from Excel. Instead I thought they could express their opinions about Ned Kelly since we spent so much time on him last term.
After taking the tests, the students checked their own work so they could see where they went wrong (if that happened). We then discussed better ways of approaching this test next week. As I told them, “It is only one example of your abilities on a given day, but since we are going to take it; let’s do our very best. You know how competitive I am!” Most year five students agreed they feel confident and ready.
As always, I will provide Minties to ‘juice up’ their brains. If you would not like your child to receive one (or two or three), please let me know. Of course, you have to be reading this blog to know!
We are reading the book, “Holes” by Louis Sachar. The class is really engaged in this story and we have discussed many things as a result. I am hoping to show the movie by Disney but if I remember correctly, it is rated PG. I will get a permission note out before we watch the film so you can voice your objections if you have any. I am providing the popcorn if you can provide the drink you want them to have on the day.
In number maths, we are starting work on fractions and revising some work on decimals we did last year. As always, solving problems in maths (as in life) is always a focus and we will work on that most Wednesdays.
That should catch you up for now; until next time…
